The Student Nurse Extern Program at Coliseum Medical Centers serves as an entry level for students currently enrolled in a registered nursing program.

We assist externs to acquire a higher degree of self-confidence, build skills in critical thinking, time-management, communication and clinical competence. The student nurse extern will apply basic fundamentals of nursing and will be supervised and guided by a nurse mentor. Student nurse externs will work the same shift as their mentor.

The Nurse Extern Program consists of three levels:

Nurse Extern I Requirements

  • Has completed the first semester of a medical-surgical rotation (Fundamentals of Nursing)
    • Must have a 3.0 GPA
    • Must have a letter of recommendation from nursing school faculty
  • Successfully completes the peer interview process
  • Must work 24 hours per 4 week pay period (flexible scheduling)

Nurse Extern II Requirements

  • In the senior year of nursing school as well as the following:
    • Maintains a GPA of 3.0
    • Must have a letter of recommendation from nursing faculty
  • If moving from a Nurse Extern 1, must have a letter of endorsement from Department Director or successful completion of peer interview process if new employee
  • Must work 24 hours per 4 week pay period (flexible scheduling)

Nurse Extern III Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited nursing program (BSN preferred)
  • Successful completion of Nurse Extern II with a letter of endorsement from Department Director and a GPA of 3.0 OR successful completion of peer interview process and registered to sit for NCLEX exam
  • Must pass the NCLEX exam within 6 weeks of graduation; NCLEX review course and exam fee reimbursed upon successful completion of the NCLEX
  • Failure to pass the NCLEX exam on the first attempt will result in termination in the program. If a position such as a patient care technician is available, the candidate may apply for this position as well as other positions in which he/she may be qualified.
  • Must work a minimum of 24 hours per 4 week pay period (flexible scheduling)
  • Nurse Externs are classified as PRN employees and are not eligible for benefits.
