Macon, GA – Coliseum Northside Hospital is now offering three-dimensional mammography, also known as tomosynthesis, which is the latest technology in breast mammography. 3D mammography is an FDA-approved advanced technology that takes multiple images, or x-rays, of the breast so hidden abnormalities can be identified.
Multiple studies have reported that 3D mammography significantly increases breast cancer detection, with a more than 40% increase in detection of invasive cancers. 3D mammography also offers clearer images and decreases the number of unnecessary biopsies, minimizing patient anxiety and unnecessary costs.
“The goal of mammography is to detect cancer, ideally in the earliest stages,” said Karla Lewis, a radiologic technologist at Coliseum Northside Hospital. “When cancer is identified and treated earlier, we know women have a better rate of survival. 3D mammography will offer our patients a better way detect breast cancer.”
In addition, Coliseum Northside Hospital is implementing the first and only FDA-cleared tomosynthesis software with artificial intelligence that is clinically proven to find more cancers, reduce false positives and reduce the reading time for radiologists by as much as 50%.
