OB Nurse Navigator

A unique service of the Family Ties Birthing Center at the Coliseum Medical Center is their Registered Nurse and Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant serving in the role as an OB Nurse Navigator.  The nurse navigator serves as your personal resource, acting as a liaison to enhance the quality and continuity of care and to expedite appointments and classes for the OB patient.  The nurse navigator’s services are provided free of charge by the Family Ties Birthing Center at the Coliseum Medical Center and include:

Medical

  • Help patients and their families understand their plan of care and guide them through their pregnancy
  • Assists patient with accessing appointments and resources in the community
  • Provide consultation to physicians and other healthcare providers regarding resources and services available to OB/GYN patients
  • Provide prenatal and post- partum Lactation Consultations  as needed
  • Ensure patient’s needs are being met through maintained communication throughout the pregnancy
  • Educates patients about resources available to them
  • Provides breastfeeding resources to all OB patients as well as answering any questions or concerns that patients may have about breastfeeding

Emotional

  • Provides consultation to OB patient and their families to access and determine personal needs and concerns

Educational

  • Assists patients in searching for online information as well as maintains a library of educational information

Meet our Nurse

Kristy Fors, RN, IBCLC, RLC
Kristy graduated from Georgia Baptist School of Nursing in Atlanta in 1990 and has been working with OB/GYN and neo-natal patients since. Over the last 20 years she has worked with inpatient Mother/Baby care, outpatient OB/GYN care, public health nursing and providing lactation education programs for two Georgia non-profit organizations.  After spending more than four thousand hours counseling new mom’s and baby’s on breastfeeding, she became certified as a Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).  As the former Director of the EPIC Breastfeeding Education Program at the Georgia Chapter - American Academy of Pediatrics she has trained over seventy physicians and Lactation Consultants to increase breastfeeding education and support in pediatric/ OB physician offices across the state of Georgia.  Over the past three years she has been practicing as a RN, Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) in two different hospital settings, including at the Coliseum since August of 2011.

For over 20 years Kristy has been working with OB/GYN and neo-natal patients in inpatient mother-baby care, outpatient OB/GYN care, public health nursing and lactation education programs. She is a certified Lactation Consultant with over 4000 hours of counseling new moms and babies on breastfeeding. Kristy is also the former director of the EPIC Breastfeeding Education Program, in which she trained over 70 physicians and lactation consultants to increase breastfeeding education and support in pediatric/OB physician offices throughout Georgia. As an OB Nurse Navigator, Kristy will be available to: help mothers with various things from scheduling appointments and registering for birthing classes to providing consultations with.
